The story behind the project
Roxana Barin
Medical student, Université de Montréal · Creator of Atlas Dermato
My name is Roxana Barin and I am a medical student at the Université de Montréal. Visual art has always played an important part in my life. Drawing and creating have shaped the way I observe the world and taught me to pay close attention to shapes, colours, textures and details.
During my medical training, I found in dermatology a natural meeting point between this artistic sensibility and my passion for medicine. What fascinates me most about this specialty is how deeply visual it is, the richness of its clinical presentations, and the reasoning needed to turn what we observe into diagnostic hypotheses.
This visual atlas was born from that meeting of art, medicine and teaching. Through my illustrations, pictograms and clinical photographs, I want to highlight the distinctive features of skin diseases and offer a simple, intuitive and memorable way to learn to recognize them.
For me, this project is also a way to bring together two worlds that have long been important in my life: creating to observe better, and observing to care better.
“Art teaches us to observe; medicine teaches us what to look for.”
